(PDF format). The brochure explains the steps and information necessary to revise a FEMA mapped floodplain.

New Low Impact Development (LID) Working Group webpage

A new webpage has been created for the Low Impact Development (LID) Working Group. The goal of LID Working Group is to review existing LID practices being used and develop a LID Manual for use in Unincorporated Pima County. This page is primarily designed to distribute LID and Green Infrasatructure (GI) information to the working group, but is full of great information of interest to anyone interested in LID and GI.


Base Flood Elevation Calculation Spreadsheet

The District has developed for public use a Base Flood Elevation Calculation Spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel format, right-click and choose "Save as" option to download) - Use this spreadsheet to calculate the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) and Regulatory Flood Elevation (RFE).  Please see Technical Procedure 101 for more information about calculating the BFE.


Establishing a local datum for Elevation Certificates within Zone A Special Flood Hazard Areas and sheetflow floodplains

The District is currently requesting surveyors and engineers completing Elevation Certificates to establish a local datum of 100.0 feet at Highest Adjacent Natural Grade (HANG) for FEMA A Zones and local sheetflow floodplains.  The District will indicate the BFE in box B.9 of the Elevation Certificate as 101.0 (for example) and indicate that the datum is HANG = 100.0 ft.  Please see the December 20, 2011 memo to surveyors and engineers (PDF format) for more information.

The District has updated a longstanding policy regarding engineering analyses for erosion hazards. The former handout is now Technical Policy 020 (PDF format), effective 11/16/2011. The policy details the requirements for engineering analyses submitted to the District to reduce or mitigate erosion hazards for structures.

FEMA has updated its Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) for all of Pima County

On June 16, 2011, FEMA issued revised its county-wide digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs). The revised FIRMs are effective as of that date. It is important for all property owners in Pima County to determine how the new DFIRMs will affect them. There are many properties within Pima County that are subject to floodplain revisions and it is important to understand the ramifications of those revisions. Please visit the L Series DFIRM page for more information.


Floodplain Studies for Four Watercourses Completed, Property Owners Notified

The District recently updated its floodplain maps for Castle Rock Wash (PDF 12 MB), Scott's Knob Wash (PDF 7 MB), Wentworth Wash (PDF 13 MB) and Old Grandad Tank Wash (PDF 20 MB) and is sending letters to property owners affected by the updates. Please view the overview map (PDF) to see the locations of the washes. Aerial photographs helped hydrologists identify which properties and structures are located within the floodplains of these washes. Flood insurance isn’t mandatory in floodplains like these since they are not under the jurisdiction of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which also maps floodplains. The letters suggest property owners should look into buying flood insurance to protect their investment, even though the insurance is not mandated.

Technical Policy 027 for Protective Measures for Private Vehicular Access (PDF format, 4 MB) has been approved and is effective as of 4/14/11. This policy covers unimproved at-grade wash crossings, improved at-grade wash crossings, and improved culverted wash crossings.
